Engines
It is always recommended with powerful petrol or Diesel engines, that an independent engineer is engaged to carry out an inspection and report. Smaller diesels and petrol units are visually inspected when fairly new, but if the engine are older or look to have been poorly maintained, an engine survey is always recommended. An engineer can also organise:
Compression Testing: Compression testing is a very valuable tool, particularly for older engines.
Oil Analysis: This is not quite such a useful tool as thought, to carry out an analysis, the age of the oil needs to be known, but generally this is very difficult to find out unless independent records are kept. The main benefit of oil analysis is that it can determine if there is salt water or antifreeze in the oil, also to determine internal wear, but only if extreme wear is present.
